Intertwined Quilt Update

Image
Find out more information about this pattern here .   It has been a few months , but while my Mom was visiting recently I picked up my Intertwined quilt to finish the hand quilting.  It really doesn't look much different than last time I shared it, but it took a whole bunch of time so it is getting its own post. Originally I had quilted lines in each of the prints/colored solids that were 1" apart, but that left the background squares blank.  It was the perfect opportunity for a little hand quilting.   I used some silvery grey Valdani perle cotton and did some chunky stitches.  It's nothing major, but I like how it turned out. This quilt is now available in my Etsy shop. Finished size: 63" x 70" I am working on a pattern for this quilt (though it will be constructed differently) and am looking for at least one more pattern tester.  I am going to write instructions for a baby, lap, and twin size version.  Is anyone interested in testing for me? I have ...

Lots of Pink Baby Quilt

Image
I have always been a fan of darker, more muted colors.  So when I started quilting I found something surprising: I really like pink.  And not just the sweet, soft pinks, but the bright, crazy pinks.  So for no particular reason I decided the other day that I needed to make a pink quilt. Quilt held by my sister-in-law, thanks Denise! I decided to make a hexagon quilt because they are fun and they are fairly quick and it's not a shape that I work with very often.  And other than squares, it seems to be the shape that I most closely associate with quilts. I quilted it with an "organic" grid again.  It isn't precise or perfect looking, but I love the feel it gives to the finished quilt.   My color inspiration came from this great Sarah Jane quilt.  That bunny is too cute.   The binding fabric is a new favorite: Kona Punch.   Finished size: 40" x 49" Backing: Sommer Bloom Tulip Tangled (available here , here , here , or here ) Binding: Kona Punch...

The Debbie Quilt - A Pattern

Image
After I finished working on The Carol Quilt pattern , I knew that I wanted to make a lap size version of the  Striped Chevrons Tutorial  that I made almost 3 years ago (crazy!).  I have received several emails from people asking for fabric requirements, more detail, or instructions on how to make the quilt larger. So I decided my next project would be a lap size version of this quilt with fabric requirements, diagrams, and more clearly written instructions.  Meet The Debbie Quilt !  It is a generously sized lap quilt at 65" x 74." The free tutorial will remain on my blog, but this pattern is easier to follow.  Also, this pattern is the perfect size to use with a jelly roll! I had some wonderful, extremely helpful, and talented pattern testers test this pattern for me. 1.   Carol's Salt Water Taffy Quilt I love that Carol used such a wide variety of colors, her quilt is stunning! 2.   Camille's quilt  I was so excited when I saw that not onl...

The Ugly Scrap Quilt

Image
Edited to add: I hope this post doesn't come off in the wrong way.  I made much more traditional looking quilts for my son's teachers and, since this is a small school, they will likely see the quilts I made for each other and I am worried she is going to wonder why I made this crazy quilt for her.  I do like the quilt, it is just much louder than I expected so I wasn't sure what to do.  Thank you for all of your words of support! Have you ever finished a quilt top and thought, "Wow, that is kind of ugly!"?  I posted this question on Instagram the other day when I finished the quilt top.  I had some very sympathetic, helpful responses, and while it does usually help to quilt and bind the project, I felt a little like I was putting lipstick on a pig. This one is a little crazy. Normally when I make a scrap quilt I spend some time evaluating how the scraps will work together. This time my only criteria was that the scrap was large enough to cut a 3.5" square fr...

Quilts for Twins - Part 2 (with instructions)

Image
I spent some time this weekend finishing up the second quilt for my new twin nieces (see the first one here ).  If you didn't guess from the first quilt, the second quilt is the second half of the rainbow.  These quilts were super fun and quick to make, so I thought I'd share quick (very rough) instructions in case you want to make your own. Cut (42) 6.75" squares for each quilt.  I used different shades of three different colors, but yours doesn't have to be rainbow-y.  It could be scrappy or a single color or whatever you want. Pair the squares together to make half square triangles.  Trim the HSTs down to 6.25" and sew together the quilt top so that it is 6 blocks x 7 blocks.   When I was finished with the quilt tops I was a little stumped about what to use for backing.  I wanted to use the same print in different color ways and I was convinced that I wouldn't find anything out there that matched both of my quilt tops.  But I checked my stash a...

Quilts for Twins (Part 1)

Image
A few days ago my sister unexpectedly went into labor at 33 weeks with her twin baby girls.  I had made quilt tops for her a few weeks ago, but they weren't at the top of the priority list since we weren't expecting the babies to be born for another month. Both babies doing well and weighed around 5 pounds.  They are going to be spending a little extra time in the hospital which gives me a little extra time to finish their quilts.  I spent the last couple days finishing the first one and am hoping to finish the second this weekend. I knew I wanted to do something that was quick and colorful, so for this quilt I went with pink/orange/yellow (can you guess what the second quilt will look like?) HSTs.  They finish at 5.75", making this quilt 36" x 41".  My sister regularly uses the quilt I made for one of her other kids ( this one ), so I knew I wanted to make the quilts a good carseat/stroller size. The backing is from Alison Glass' Sunprint collection and the ...
