Flirting the Issue Skirt
This skirt has been on my want-to-make list for a while and when I saw that Rachel was doing a sew-along I knew I wanted to participate. I got a little bit of a late start, but this is a quick project and one that I would definitely make again (even though I normally hate sewing clothes).
For the main fabric I used an Anna Maria Horner rayon print. It is amazing. Voile is soft and silky and nice but it gets so wrinkled, and the rayon has a really nice feel without requiring the constant ironing. It was also easier to work with than voile. The lining is Robert Kaufman Cambridge lawn in grey. While the lawn is going to require ironing, hopefully having it hidden under the rayon will make it more forgiving.
Because I am tall and I tend to like my skirts on the longer side I cut my fabric 26" long.
The elastic casing was definitely the most annoying part of making the skirt, but it wasn't difficult and it wouldn't keep me from making another. I ended up cutting my elastic down to about 8" less than my waist measurement because it felt like the weight of the fabric was going to make the skirt fall down, ha ha. It is EXTREMELY comfortable.
My hard working, sleep deprived husband was kind enough to snap a couple pictures this morning but this was the only one that didn't have the bottom of the skirt cut off. Thanks anyway dear!
I have a couple more rayon prints that may be turning themselves into skirts in the near future :)

Suits you very well. I might give a rayon version a try, as I do try to avoid ironing wherever possible. Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteReally cute! I like that length.
ReplyDeleteLooks lovely on you, definitely make another.
ReplyDeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I'm tall too :-)
ReplyDeleteVery cute skirt Erica! I hate wearing skirts (although I love dresses) but seeing all these skirts pop up in my reader is making me wish I did wear skirts...
ReplyDeleteSo swingy and cute on you!! Brava!!
ReplyDeleteOh, good! I was wondering how rayon would behave and how it would sew. Did you have to use any special settings or needles to sew with it? Does this rayon feel thicker than quilting cotton or lightweight like the voile? I mean, I know you said it is heavy, but is it also thick-ish? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am on the tall side, so making my own skirts is a must. I love to choose my own length. Your skirt is so cute. Love your picture and that sounds like something my hubby would do. They try....
ReplyDeleteCute!! I have this same AMH print, and I might just have to turn it into a skirt.
ReplyDeleteI love your skirt and I love the AMH rayon fabric. I have made a dress and several shirts out of her rayon fabrics and they sew and press like a dream. Enjoy your new skirt!
ReplyDeleteA gorgeous skirt and the perfect length!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! I've been thinking about making this skirt too, just as soon as I get my hands on the right fabric.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the process of making my own version of this skirt with voile. I'm trying cotton next. The rayon is a great idea though and I may have to make one! I love the print you chose.
ReplyDeletei didn't make a skirt in this sew-along but there are so many cute ones popping up I may have to join in. yours turned out great
