Fussy Cut Sampler QAL - Blocks 17-20

Image
This week is all about chapter 5 in the Fussy Cut Sampler . Block 17 focuses finding secondary prints that coordinate with the primary print.   Block 18 is probably my favorite block so far.  The point is to use two different colorways of the same design. Block 19.  I might regret using these cats on this block because it might not be the best way to highlight them, but I really like the cats with the coral. Block 20, framed motifs.  If you want to see everyone else's block, head over to Instagram and check out #thefussycutsamplerqal.

The Alice Quilt Pattern - Available Now

Image
I am excited that The Alice Quilt Pattern is finally ready and is now available from Craftsy and Etsy .  I had a few goals with this pattern: Beginner-friendly, but looks like it is complicated to make Uses fat quarters Quick to put together Showcases fabric I think (hope) that I was successful in all of these areas.  The pattern has been tested by 3 wonderful pattern testers and I get to share their quilts with you today. Miranda's Quilt Cathy's Quilt Sally's Quilt I hope you enjoy the pattern!

Fussy Cut Sampler QAL - Blocks 13-16

Image
Chapter 4 in the Fussy Cut Sampler  is about precision fussy cutting. Block 13 focuses on centering a large motif.  I have had this purple cat print sitting out on my cutting table, just waiting for the right block to use it in the quilt along, so when I noticed that it mentioned this AMH print I knew I had to use them together!  For Block 14 I used this Heather Ross frog print.  I really like that this block has a place to show off different parts of the print all grouped together in one block. Bock 15.  I think a lot of people have this Lizzy House print so it has been showing up quite a bit in the quilt along photos on Instagram.  This block is supposed to emphasize mirroring.  Mine turned out pretty subtle, but if you look closely you can see that the orange flying geese each mirror each other. Block 16.  This block is supposed to focus on the border.  Mine ended up kind of bright but it is full of my favorite colors. The quilt along is t...

Culcita Box Unboxing - June 2017

Image
This month's Culcita Box contained a delightful collection by Amy Gibson called Meriwether.  I hadn't seen any of the prints in this collection before it arrived in the mail and it was love at first sight. The box also contained a cute pattern. And a fortune cookie (eaten before the photo, ha ha) and a label. After the box arrived I checked out some images of the collection on Instagram.  They are nice, but they don't do the colors justice.  It is a really lovely collection. I tend to get into ruts where I only buy fabric from the same designers over and over again, but if you are looking to try something new, Amy's collection is one to check out.  That yellow floral in the center top of the photo is gorgeous. If you are interested in signing up for the monthly subscription service,  Culcita  offers really flexible options with different cuts of fabric and frequency of delivery. Check out my previous posts to see what they have sent so far this year. ...

The Fussy Cut Sampler QAL - Blocks 9-12

Image
The QAL is moving along and I have another set of blocks to share.  These were made using blocks 9-12 in  The Fussy Cut Sampler  book. I used some of the leftover scraps from the Alice Quilt backing fabric for this one.  There is so much fun detail in the print.  I didn't realize until I finished the block that 3/4 of the fabrics have some metallic on them! This was one of the most difficult blocks for me so far.  It is meant to show value and my first attempt at the block didn't illustrate this very well so I made a second one.  This block was supposed to be about transparency, but I took it a little bit of a different direction because I was having a difficult time finding the right fabric combo and I really wanted to use these flowers. I cut into my precious stash of Constellations for this block.  The point of the block was to play with scale - a smaller and larger scale version so I went with a star and a constellation. It's not too late to j...

The Alice Quilt

Image
I LOVED working with these Wonderland fabrics that I received in the Culcita Box this past month and decided to make a quilt for my next pattern, The Alice Quilt. The pattern is currently with some wonderful pattern testers and will be available in a couple weeks, but I wanted to go ahead and share some photos because I am excited about it.  The pattern is fat quarter friendly and comes together quickly. I tried to get a photo of the quilt this past weekend while we were strawberry picking, but the wind was out of control. But the strawberries were amazing! I splurged and bought yardage of the navy Alice print for the back of the quilt.  It is gorgeous! The Fussy Cut Sampler QAL Blocks 4-8

Image
I apologize that things have been a little slow on the blog.  I have been sewing and I have a couple of quilts to share in the next couple weeks after a marathon of binding and Netflix over the past few days. In the meantime, I did finish a few more blocks in the Fussy Cut Sampler Quilt A Long.  This has made a complete disaster of my sewing room, but it has been fun to dig through my stash and use fabrics that have been collecting dust. I felt like I had played a little too safe with the colors in the first batch of blocks, so I tried to liven things up a little bit.   The block above is my favorite so far.  I think I might try making more of them for a quilt sometime in the future. I originally didn't fussy cut the little circles in the little square in this block but I had to go back and fix it when I noticed. I didn't want to be limited by a particular color scheme so things are a little all over the place.   I am looking forward to making the next batch of...

The Fussy Cut Sampler QAL - Blocks 1-4

Image
This week was the first week in the Fussy Cut Sampler QAL.  I decided to join in because it has been so long since I did a quilt along.  A couple years ago I really enjoyed the Lucky Stars BOM   and then I made an attempt at the Farmer's Wife quilt , but the blocks had so many tiny pieces that I got sick of it. Block 1 The blocks in this book are nice because there aren't a lot of tiny pieces, and they focus on trying to get the most visual impact from each fabric. Block 2 I tend to be a little careless about directional fabrics, but this has made me think a little bit more about how fabrics are presented. Block 3 If you are on Instagram, you can find blocks made by other people participating in the QAL with the hashtag #thefussycutsamplerqal. Block 4 It's not too late to join in!  The QAL will be making 4 blocks each week and each week has different prizes.
