pillow-ing

Image
It has been a long week.  Lots of non-fun stuff to do plus sick kids and I needed a small project.  If you follow me on Instagram (you can find me under ericajackman) you may have seen that I basted my queen sized Rocky Mountain Puzzle quilt a couple days ago.  I am not a fast quilter, especially with large quilts, so it will be a little while before it is finished.  In the mean time I thought I'd make a coordinating pillow for the guest bed. I used some of the Fort Firefly fabric that was my inspiration for the quilt as well as my favorite Botanics print . Until the guest room quilt is done, this size pillow (14"x28") fits perfectly on this chair in our family room.  I think another pillow this size is in my future :)

January Blocks

Image
I finished the first 10 Farmer's Wife blocks and I have decided the templates aren't really so bad.  For the first three blocks I was tracing the templates onto the fabric and then cutting with scissors.  This did not work for me, so I did a little Googling and found Camille's post about cutting her Farmer's Wife blocks.  This method worked really well for me and even that block on the top right with a zillion little pieces turned out ok. I am going pretty scrappy with the colors for the quilt and I am trying to use scraps in every block.  This also seems like a good opportunity to use up some novelty prints that I have sitting around so I am going to do some fussy cutting in some of the blocks. For do. Good Stitches this month Becky asked to make Crazy Square blocks using this tutorial and boy-ish colors.  This should make a fun quilt for a little boy and I am always happy to have a reason to use up some scraps :) Even though cutting the pieces for the Farmer's

WIP Wednesday

Image
It has been a little while since I have posted a WIP post but I have actually been working on stuff. 1.  My Rocky Mountain Puzzle queen sized quilt top is finished.  I have been working on it here and there and somehow it is now complete.  See that fabric sticking out underneath on the left?  That is the backing fabric and it is the reason why this project has stalled.  I am a little short on the print for this backing and I haven't figured out how to remedy that situation yet. 2.  Curtains for the master bedroom.  I don't know why I thought it was a good idea to make curtains because I really, really hate making them.  I also hate hanging the curtain rod which is probably actually the worst part.  Drills and levels and I don't mix well.  I have completed the panels for the biggest window in the room and have almost finished the panels for the second window.  The fact that my husband has pure hatred for this print has really put a damper on wanting to finish these.  They ar

Ann Kelle projects

Image
Around the time I started getting really into quilting, the Ann Kelle Remix prints were released.  I bought a lot of them.  I was so excited by the bright and fun and exciting prints.  So when I had the opportunity to make a couple of projects with new Ann Kelle prints for Robert Kaufman I jumped at the chance. The first project was for the new collection Wonder .  I seriously thought my daughter was going to hide these fabrics and never give them back because they have two of her favorite things: rainbows and unicorns.  I made an apron with each colorway, one that is pleated and a peplum apron. The second project is a quilt using the Girlfriends line.  Two new amazingly adorable fairy prints have been added to the collection.  This quilt uses a combination of Girlfriends, Remix, and Kona Solids and it was quilted by the brilliant Angela Walters. Tutorials for these projects will be available on the Robert Kaufman website by March.

Lucky Stars Block of the Month Finished Quilt

Image
I loved working on these Lucky Stars this past year but I am happy to finally have them put to good use. Each of these blocks is only 6" finished. I should have taken these photos with something to show the scale but they are pretty tiny. Because the blocks are so small and they aren't going to get a lot of wear and tear hanging up on the wall and because I didn't want to have to quilt over the tiny little bulky seams, I did not quilt over the stars.  I densely quilted the neutral blocks and then stitched in the ditch around the stars.  I like how it helps the stars pop a little more. The background fabric is a very faint dot print from Vintage Modern by Bonnie and Camille and the brown fabric in the background blocks is one of my new favorite prints from Up, Up, and Away (available here and here ).   This is going to hang up in our new guest room and I think it will look nice with the Rocky Mountain Puzzle quilt that I am making for the guest bed (yes, I'm still wo

a quilt for my Mom

Image
I need to make some scrap quilts this year and my sisters have each put dibs on one.  But before I get that started, I wanted to make a warm and snuggly quilt for my Mom.  One of the first quilts that I ever made was for my Mom but since the quilts I have made for my sisters are a little more fun that the one that I made for her (see here , here , and here ) I thought she needed a new one first. A while back I pinned this quilt on Flickr (Lindsey actually just posted a tutorial on how to make it) and when I was looking for a scrap quilt idea, I knew this was the one.  I wasn't sure how she put hers together at the time, but I made mine pretty much the same way except I used a 16" square in square shape and then made my half square triangles like this . I also arranged mine in zig zags instead of diamonds. My sisters all requested non-bright, non-pink quilts so I knew that this quilt needed to use a bunch of my bright scraps (hope that was okay Mom!).  The minky made the quil
